“Seniors are initially attracted to Dawson for the quality programs and stay for the welcoming atmosphere, enthusiastic volunteers and caring facilitators.”

Thirty years ago, Marc Paradis walked through the doors of BGC Dawson, ready to start a new job and a new program for seniors. His previous work with seniors and his studies in leisure made him a perfect fit, but I don’t think even Marc could have foretold how much impact he and his program would have on our community for all these years.

When creating a senior’s program, Marc’s first goal was to unite all the different activities going on and mesh them into a cohesive and engaging calendar for our seniors. Those early years saw hits like exercise classes and line dancing. As time went on, Marc saw no shortage of enthusiasm, ideas, and volunteers to help create and execute the many ideas for activities. <
« The seniors are very vocal and dynamic; they are helpful and involved », says Marc as we sit together in the games room. « They enjoy having a program catered to just them. They have a sense of belonging here at Dawson. They feel welcomed and appreciated. »
So what are the seniors of Verdun up to these days at Dawson? There’s a walking club called the Riverside Ramblers that meet on Tuesdays. Lots of different movement activities like multi-Level exercise and Tai-Chi. Classic hits like Sandbags, Ping Pong and Darts are staples. It’s these kinds of activities that allowed the seniors program to not only grow but flourish these last thirty years. It’s made Marc’s job a labour of love.

“The pandemic was hard on our seniors. While many participated in virtual programming, we are so happy to have our seniors back in the building!” exclaimed Chad Polito, Executive Director of BGC Dawson. Registration is presently underway for fall programming. “If you are 50 or older, why not sign up for a fitness or yoga class? Even if you have never tried one in the past, it’s a wonderful way to meet new friends while staying active.”
The members of the seniors program are among the most dedicated to BGC Dawson. They are genuinely « active » members. In addition to participating in their regular programming, they are involved as volunteers and fill the building with energy and laughter. They have grown their program, adapted it to the needs of their community and tailored it in such a way that there’s something for everyone. They are the guardians of something extraordinary and we at BGC Dawson are thankful to them.
