Toujours ensemble: Helping Kids in Verdun’s Elementary Schools

Do you know the latest addition to the Toujours ensemble organization? In 2015, the Sac à Dos program was established, joining the Parcours program, the school lunch service and the Passeport pour ma réussite (Pathways to Education) program. The Sac à Dos team works in partnership with local elementary schools, meeting children where they are at, to support them in their academic, personal, and social development. By working with families and teachers, Toujours ensemble aims to build a network of support for kids who need it the most.

Myriam Courtemanche, a youth worker in the Sac à Dos program, is immensely proud to be a part of the daily life of youth in Verdun: « Working in the program gives us the chance to accompany young people, often at the onset of their elementary school years. We get to know them and see them evolve throughout their journey. The program allows us to develop a bond and trust with the children, to look for tools that best correspond to their needs and to help them develop their strengths and interests,” she says.

“The team at Sac à Dos also collaborates with schoolteachers to reinforce the mastering of tools used in class. We can offer families more quality time with their children because most of the homework is done with Sac à Dos. But most importantly, we get to see firsthand the future citizens that these young people are becoming and to know that we were a stone that helped pave their way, » concludes Myriam.

The program is made possible by a community of donors and partners who have been involved for many years. The organization would like to thank them for their trust and for their investment in the success of Verdun’s youth.
