Dawson: Guy wins WestJet Charity Raffle

Special Collaboration

In November 2021, BGC Dawson was named the CBC Montreal Charity of the Year which gave increased visibility to the organization’s programs and services. Throughout the months of November and December, CBC Montreal featured stories of the life-changing programs and services that BGC Dawson has been offering in Verdun for over 60 years (cbc.ca/bekindqc).

The CBC Charity of the Year events wrapped up on December 31, 2021 with a fundraising raffle thanks to the generosity of WestJet. Since 2007, WestJet and BGC Canada have partnered together to transform the experiences of young people from BGC clubs across the country. BGC Dawson has benefited over the years from the WestJet Gift of Flight donation which has been used to raise funds for the organization’s programs.

This year, WestJet once again donated one roundtrip flight for two guests to any regularly scheduled WestJet destination. This prize was part of the Charity of the Year fundraising events and was raffled off on December 31, 2021. Long-time Verdun resident Ann Guy was the lucky winner of the WestJet Ticket Raffle. Just over $6,000 was raised in support of BGC Dawson through the CBC Charity of the Year events and WestJet ticket raffle.

Ann plans on using the WestJet Gift of flight to travel to the west coast next summer. “We would love to travel to Victoria, Vancouver and Lake Louise. There are so many beautiful places in Canada to explore” remarks Ann. “I will certainly put these tickets to good use!”

Ann Guy is no stranger to BGC Dawson having served on the organization’s board of directors from 2014-2018. In 2015, Ann Guy was named Grande Verdunoise of the year for her extraordinary contributions to the Verdun community. From volunteering with numerous nonprofits to serving as Montreal City Councillor (2009-2013), Ann Guy is dedicated to making Verdun a better community.

What motivates Ann?  The love of volunteering was modeled to her from a young age. Ann shared a memory of a conversation with her grandfather who once told her that “volunteering will be given back to you 100 fold!” to which Ann replied “But grandpapa 0 times 100 is zero.” Ann’s grandfather assured her that “one day you will understand.”

Ann encourages everyone to get involved in community service and volunteering. “The best way to know a community is to get involved. Verdun has hundreds of organizations that need volunteers and there is something for everyone!” says Ann. “We are so fortunate- it is just natural to give back” concludes Ann.
