The 12 Days of Dawson

For a second year in a row, BGC Dawson kicked off the month of December with the 12 Days of Dawson, an annual event geared at making the holiday season a little more magical for members of our community.

The event kicked off with children and youth making beautiful holiday cards and ornaments that were given to seniors in the community. When reflecting on this year’s event, Darley Polony, youth programs coordinator at BGC Dawson, commented: “It truly was a beautiful experience. Working together with the children’s programs and having youth write special greetings to seniors was a delight”.

The festivities continued with caroling through the neighbourhood. Children singing holiday favourites like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Deck the Halls could be heard on the streets throughout Verdun. In case you missed it, you can check out some of the caroling here

Food and toy drives were in abundance with so many generous community partners coming together to make sure that all members of our community have food on their table and gifts under their tree. Every child in Dawson’s afterschool program received gifts this year as well as a personalized squish mallow with their name on it.

On Day 11 of the 12 Days of Dawson, seniors enjoyed getting together for a meal and songs. “COVID-19 has been rough on seniors and being able to gather once again is so important for our seniors”, comments Marc Paradis, Seniors Program Coordinator at BGC Dawson, while setting up for the event. “This is so wonderful and very much appreciated”, remarks one senior participating in the event.

The 12 Days of Dawson wrapped up by providing members of our community with fully cooked turkey dinners complete with cranberry and apple stuffing, peas, and potatoes. Tourtières and boxes filled with homemade cookies were given out in an effort to spread more holiday cheer.

Laurence, a dedicated volunteer in the food bank, had nothing but wonderful feedback to share. “Dawson really made this holiday season special for so many of our members. The gifts, meals and financial support made a huge difference!”

All this work is not possible without the generous support of our community. If you are looking for a last-minute gift idea, why not purchase a raffle ticket for your chance to 2- round trip tickets anywhere WestJet flies. Proceeds will support the programs and services of BGC Dawson. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased right here in this link !
